Belgium – Betclic halts operations in Belgium

By - 9 May 2017

Online gaming operator Betclic, owned by Lov Group of Stéphane Courbit and the Société des Bains de Mer Monegasque, is throwing in the towel in Belgium.

The site had only started legal activity in Belgium in May 2016, whilst all the other operators had been live for more than two years.

Betclic was registered on the Blacklist of the Gambling Commission between 2012 and 2014, which accused it of being accredited in other European countries, but not in Belgium. The opening of an investigation had led to the seizure of €600,000. 170 Belgian players with an account on Betclic had been identified with 162 fined. To avoid legal action, Betclic agreed to pay €150,000 and reimburse €82,900 corresponding to the fines imposed on the players.

By taking over a legal activity last year, with the Ardent group (Circus in France), Betclic therefore started from scratch. Since last year, Betclic has been refocusing on its profitable activities and closing down sites that are not or more profitable. In December 2016 it closed the doors to Everestpoker.fr, encouraging players to refer to Betclic.fr.
