Malaysia – Tan to challenge Genting’s Malaysian monopoly

By - 5 December 2016

Berjaya Group Founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan is considering making a fresh attempt to end the monopoly of Genting Malaysia Bhd by applying for a licence to run a casino in Malaysia.

Mr. Tan believes Malaysia should have more than one casino operator. He tried and failed to bring gaming to his resort at Berjaya Hills in Pahang 12 years ago.

Berjaya Hills already has a permit to operate slot machines.

Mr. Tan said: “The government should give us the licence as we are investing and creating jobs for the people. Why give Genting the monopoly for 50 to 60 years? We are in the lottery business and we never had a monopoly. The pie for the casino business is big enough for us to share.”
