Malta – VAT scrapped from event betting in Malta

By - 11 December 2017

The turn of the year will see Value Added Tax scrapped for Maltese companies offering bets on the outcome of an event, including sports as will the services of bookmakers and betting exchanges.

As well as sports betting, virtual, betting, lotteries and betting on the performance of an index will all be VAT free although VAT will still be added to casino style betting, such as blackjack, poker and roulette, and any game of chance where they outcome is determined by a random generator will not be exempt from the tax.

A Council of Europe directive on the common system of VAT says states may be exempt from VAT ‘betting, lotteries and other forms of gambling subject to the conditions and limitations laid down by each Member State.’
