Mexico – Police investigate shooting outside casino in Monterrey

By - 22 September 2017

A casino in the Mexican city of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo León has been shot at by a group of men who were aboard a moving vehicle, causing commotion amongst those in the area and the rapid intervention of police forces.

No people were injured during the event which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning (September 18). Gunmen shot at the casino’s façade.

A large police presence was seen outside the Winland Casino on Avenida Garza Sada, located in the southern section of the city. Authorities will review several security cameras that are in the area and authorities have found 8 calibre 45 calibre firearm shells, which were taken by forensics in for analysis. It is believed that the men were travelling in a white vehicle.

The attack on the casino was the culmination of 24 hours of violence after hit men targeted and shot dead three men in separate attacks in different parts of the city and left one woman seriously injured.
Last month marks the sixth year anniversary of the Casino Casino Royale tragedy which left 52 people dead. In 2011 a group of armed men attacked, and then set fire to, the casino, located in an upmarket neighbourhood of the city. It was later discovered that the attack on the Casino Royale was revenge for unpaid protection money by the Zetas drugs cartel.

Although the motives behind the latest shooting remain unclear for now the shooting will only make gaming in the city even more contentious. In August 2016 the mayor of Monterrey Adrián de la Garza Santos said that he had not given the green light to the opening of any new casinos after rumours began to surface that management of the Caliente group were recruiting staff for the reopening of a casino locally.

In March this year the mayor was forced to reiterate the fact that no casino licences had been granted during his term of office. The mayor told fellow lawmakers that casinos had been blocked from opening during his administration via a specific impediment that allows local authorities to intervene to ensure that they do not open.
