The Portuguese gambling regulator – Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos (SIRJ) has agreed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the UK Gambling Commission.

Nick Tofiluk, – The Gambling Commission’s Director of regulation, said: “We are pleased to announce this bilateral agreement with the SIRJ as part of our continuing co-operation. Working together with other international regulators is essential to effective gambling regulation and MoUs are a useful way of formalising and streamlining the procedures for information sharing as an aid to efficient and effective collaboration.”

Teresa Monteiro, Vice-Chair of SRIJ – Serviço de Regulação e Inspeção de Jogos of Instituto do Turismo de Portugal, said: “The agreement sets out a mutual collaboration plan intended to drive efforts to safeguard that online gambling is conducted in a fair and open way, to avoid excessive and unregulated gambling, to prevent gambling from being a source of crime and disorder, as well as to protect vulnerable people from addiction or exploitation. This bilateral cooperation agreement will strengthen and complement the general framework of the cooperation agreement on online gambling services signed by the gambling regulatory authorities of EEA Member States, dated November 2015.”
